SAMPLE DEVOTIONALS:
Pleasing God
Genesis 15:6 “And he believed in the Lord; and He counted it to him for righteousness.”
My wife’s Uncle Tom, knowing I liked to hunt offered to show me a place for opening day. He wasn’t a deer hunter and I was a little skeptical. We drove probably twenty miles and walked through the woods a little farther. There were plenty of tracks and the soybeans had not been gathered, so there was plenty of food and water as well nearby.
I didn’t have a stand in those days, so I returned and built a platform on a fork hanging out over the field. The next morning was bitter cold and that was a long way to drive, but I went and killed the largest eight point I ever saw that weighed over 200 pounds field dressed. How I got him in my bronco by myself even field dressed is another bloody story. My “faith” in Tom’s judgment paid off.
Abram’s faith in God paid off, too. He “believed God and He counted it to him for righteousness.” How do we really please God? The Bible says, “Be ye therefore perfect,” but as hard as we try, we fail. Abram not only “believed” with his mind but showed it by living obediently.
That’s how we please Him. Believe in Jesus and attempt to live for Him.
Prayer. Lord, I am reminded how much I miss the mark every day. Thank You that it is not what I can do but my trust in You that counts. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Never Look Back
Genesis 19:26 “But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”
As I sat in my deer stand in a tight fork one morning, a huge buck – eight points or better with horns way outside his ears came running by from my left. I eased my rifle to my right shoulder, and as I was taking aim, the fork caught me and I could swing no further. He got away and I was sick. It was the biggest one I had ever seen. I have thought of that many times and wondered, “What if…?” You can’t beat yourself up over stuff like that. You have to move on.
Lot’s wife looked back, yearning for her belongings and past that had been destroyed, disobeyed God, and became a block of salt. We can’t look at what might have been.
Lord, Help me to only look back with joy or to make things right. Forgive me of my failures and help me to look to brighter days. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Calling Evil Good
Proverbs 24:24 “He that saith unto the wicked, ‘Thou art righteous,’ him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him.”
If a game warden began to ignore violations of game laws, it would soon be out of control. There would soon be no game to hunt or enjoy. If bad sportsmanship is accepted, then we are calling it good.
We are coming to the point where we are calling evil, good. The Bible calls homosexuality evil, but we are on the verge of voting homosexual marriage into law. We are already striking down laws that regulate unwed cohabitation. It is against God’s law. Gambling used to be illegal in most states, but now it is legal and states promote the lottery.
Our unchanging God will never reduce His standards. If we want to please the Lord, we will go by God’s word no matter what society accepts. We will be judged by His standards, not man’s.
Prayer. O God, it breaks my heart to see where we are heading! Please, turn us back to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
