Do Adult Children Still Need Parenting?

Bob Green, in this concise but meaty discourse, feels a burden to solve the problem known as the “helicopter” parent. A helicopter parent is one who hovers too closely to adult children. Yes, adult children continue to benefit from wise parenting, but not the kind that interferes with or over-runs the boundaries which impede their journey toward personal autonomy. Through a meaningful series of topical essays the author offers practical and helpful advice for caring parents about how to continue to love their children once they leave home, but always at a healthy distance. Biblical insights coupled with Christian values like honesty and accountability season the author’s thoughts with eternal wisdom. The author’s goal for every adult child is independence with only enough parental support to insure that they realize their destination. This author does a good job in pointing out boundaries and warning signs parents need to respect during their children’s journey toward self-actualizing. Bob writes from the context of a healthy stable marriage with his wife, Martha, through which they have raised their children in both good and trying circumstances. A convincing quality of authenticity is felt throughout these pages leading the reader to personally connect with two loving parents who have learned how to let their children go in order for them to chart their own way in today’s world. As a parent who sometimes is tempted to hover like a helicopter over my three adult children, I probably need to thank Bob Green on their behalf for taking time to write this book and getting a copy to me to read.
